Lisa Hogan: From Model and Actress to Clarkson’s Farm Star

For Lisa Hogan, life on a farm in the English countryside was hardly the obvious next chapter. Before she became a familiar face on Clarkson’s Farm, she had worked as a model, explored acting, developed an interest in sculpture and experienced an aircraft accident that could have ended her life. Her relationship with television presenter Jeremy Clarkson brought renewed public attention, but it was her practical role at Diddly Squat Farm that introduced viewers to a different side of her.

Today, Hogan is known for much more than being Jeremy Clarkson’s partner. On Amazon Prime Video’s Clarkson’s Farm, she helps run the farm shop, deals with the everyday challenges of rural business and brings her own humour to a series often dominated by Clarkson’s ambitious ideas. Her story is one of several professional reinventions, from Dublin and the entertainment world to a working farm in the Cotswolds.

Growing Up in Dublin and Facing an Early Loss

Lisa Hogan was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Her father, Maurice Hogan, was an architect, while her mother, Arlene Underwood, worked as a model. Hogan attended Alexandra College in Milltown, Dublin, before beginning a career that would take her beyond Ireland.

One of the defining events of her early life was the death of her father when she was just 14. He died of a heart attack, a loss Hogan later discussed in interviews. Although the details of her private grief belong to her, the experience forms an important part of the background she has shared publicly.

Her professional life would eventually cross several different fields. Rather than remaining in one industry, Hogan moved between modelling, film production, acting and art. That varied experience later became useful when she took on the unpredictable responsibilities of running a business on a farm.

From Modelling to the Film Industry

Hogan began her working life in modelling, following a path that also connected with her mother’s experience. Her appearance and height helped her enter an industry where presentation mattered, but modelling was only one part of her professional story.

During the 1990s, she also worked behind the scenes in film production. One important connection was with British comedian and filmmaker John Cleese, whose production company, Fish Productions, was involved in the comedy film Fierce Creatures.

Released in 1997, Fierce Creatures featured an ensemble cast that included Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin. Hogan appeared in the film as a sea-lion keeper, a small but notable screen credit in a production featuring established comedy performers.

Her involvement in the film industry gave her experience beyond simply appearing in front of a camera. Research and production work exposed her to the practical side of entertainment, while acting offered another way to explore the creative world.

However, Hogan did not build a long-running acting career around that early role. Her professional interests continued to develop, eventually leading her towards sculpture and other artistic work.

The Aircraft Accident That Changed Everything

One of the most extraordinary events in Hogan’s life occurred in August 1996, before she became widely known to television audiences.

Hogan was travelling from Majorca to Northolt, in west London, for a production meeting connected with Fierce Creatures. The aircraft overshot the runway and crashed into a van on a nearby road. Contemporary reporting and Hogan’s later account describe a serious accident that left passengers facing a frightening situation.

Speaking to Ireland’s RTÉ Radio 1 in 2024, Hogan recalled the violent impact and the debris inside the aircraft. She described getting out onto the wing and making her way down to the road after the plane came to a stop.

The accident was a significant episode in her life, but it should not overshadow the years of work that followed. Hogan continued to pursue professional and personal interests rather than becoming defined solely by what happened that day.

Her willingness to discuss the experience also offered viewers a glimpse of a chapter that had little to do with her later public image as a farmer or television personality.

Marriage, Motherhood and a Life Outside the Spotlight

Before her relationship with Clarkson, Hogan was married to Dutch aristocrat and art collector Baron Steven Bentinck. The couple married in 1998 and had three children: Wolfe, Alice and Lizzy.

Hogan’s first marriage connected her to a world far removed from the muddy fields and farm-shop queues audiences would later see on television. Nevertheless, her family life remained largely private, and relatively little verified information about her children is available in the public domain.

The marriage eventually ended, and Hogan and Bentinck separated. Media reports have not always agreed on the details of their timeline, so claims about their relationship should be treated cautiously unless supported by reliable reporting.

What is clear is that Hogan had established a family and pursued interests of her own long before becoming associated with Clarkson. Her identity therefore extends beyond the familiar description of her as a television presenter’s partner.

How Lisa Hogan Met Jeremy Clarkson

Hogan and Jeremy Clarkson met through mutual friends before eventually beginning a relationship. In a 2024 interview with RTÉ Radio 1’s Sunday with Miriam, Hogan recalled that friends had tried to introduce them on previous occasions. They finally met at a Christmas party, where a conversation led to further contact.

Their relationship became public knowledge around 2017. Clarkson was already internationally recognised through Top Gear, his newspaper columns and later motoring programmes. Hogan, by contrast, had a more varied professional background and was not primarily known as a television celebrity.

The couple’s relationship became a prominent part of the story told by Clarkson’s Farm. Their exchanges often involve disagreements over Clarkson’s plans, the realities of running the farm and the practical consequences of his decisions.

Despite their public visibility, the pair have not married. Hogan has explained that marriage is not a priority for her at this stage of her life. Her comments reflect her own position rather than any suggestion that their relationship needs a formal milestone to be meaningful.

Their on-screen chemistry has helped make the series entertaining, but Hogan’s contribution goes beyond reacting to Clarkson. She has developed a working role in the business and regularly helps manage the demands that come with it.

Diddly Squat Farm Shop and the Rise of Clarkson’s Farm

A new chapter began in 2020 when Hogan and Clarkson co-founded the Diddly Squat Farm Shop in Chadlington, Oxfordshire. The shop sells farm-related products and other goods connected with the business, while the wider farm provides the setting for their television series.

When Clarkson’s Farm premiered in 2021, audiences watched Clarkson attempt to manage agricultural operations despite having limited farming experience. The programme also showed the people who helped make the operation function, including farm manager Kaleb Cooper and Hogan.

Hogan’s responsibilities at the shop involve more than appearing on camera. She has been involved in managing the business and developing products, navigating the commercial and practical challenges that come with turning a farm into a public attraction.

The series also reveals the less polished side of rural life: difficult livestock decisions, unpredictable animals, business problems and disagreements about how the farm should operate. Hogan’s humour and direct approach provide a contrast to Clarkson’s often elaborate schemes.

Her affection for the animals has also become part of the show’s appeal. In a 2024 RTÉ interview, she spoke about becoming attached to a piglet she had tried to protect. The episode illustrated a familiar difficulty of farm life: caring for individual animals while recognising that livestock farming involves decisions that can be emotionally uncomfortable.

Through the series, Hogan has become a recognisable personality in her own right. Viewers see her managing practical responsibilities rather than simply occupying the role of Clarkson’s partner.

Art, Writing and a New Creative Chapter

Alongside her earlier modelling and acting work, Hogan has pursued sculpture and other artistic interests. Her creative background adds another dimension to a career that has never followed a single, conventional route.

In 2025, she announced her first book, My Animals and Other Eejits: Farming the Year at Diddly Squat. Published by Century, an imprint of Penguin Random House, the book takes readers through the seasons of farm life, from breeding and lambing to harvest and the everyday complications of running the business.

The book also draws on Hogan’s experiences as an artist, former model and actress, connecting her earlier life with the work that now occupies much of her time. It offers a way to tell farm stories from her own perspective rather than relying entirely on the television programme’s presentation.

That development reflects the broader shape of Hogan’s career. Modelling led to film work; artistic interests opened another creative path; and life at Diddly Squat created opportunities in business, television and writing.

Lisa Hogan’s public story is still unfolding. Although many people first encounter her through Jeremy Clarkson, her life includes decades of experiences that began long before the cameras arrived at the farm. From Dublin to the film industry, from sculpture to farming, she has built an unusual career by moving between worlds—and making each new chapter her own.
